Stellar Discovery: How AI Could Open New Windows into the Cosmos

Our understanding of the universe is poised to progress at warp speed, thanks to new research by scientists at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. The NCSA scientists are pioneering the use of GPU-accelerated deep learning to detect and interpret gravitational waves, ripples in the fabric of space and time caused by exploding stars, colliding black holes, and even the birth of the universe itself. Their work, which uses simulations run on traditional supercomputers to train AI, has the potential to speed scientific discovery by slashing the time and computational resources needed to analyze gravitational waves and the astronomical events that cause them. As a result, researchers can spot waves that previously went undetected and to probe them more deeply, putting us closer to understanding how the universe works. “Scientists might find gravitational waves not predicted by Einstein (in his general theory of relativity

Down So Long: AI Offers Hope for More Effective Depression Treatments

Thinking about depression treatment is likely to depress you. The disease, which is the world’s leading cause of disability , affects an estimated 300 million people globally. Although there are plenty of possible treatments, doctors have no reliable way to know what’s best for each patient. Many people struggle with depression for years — enduring medication side effects and feelings of despair — while they contend with what’s now a trial-and-error effort. “That suffering motivated us to find a better way,” said Robert Fratila, co-founder and chief technology officer at Montréal-based startup, Aifred Health . The company is using GPU-accelerated deep learning to predict the best treatments based on a patient’s symptoms, demographics and the results of certain medical tests. Its work so far earned it a spot as one of the top 10 teams in the ongoing $5 million IBM Watson AI XPRIZE Competition , Personalized Depression Treatment Depression is more than just a bout of the blues. How AI Brings a Critical Eye to Video, and Keeps Companies Out of Hot Water

Streaming video traffic is growing exponentially, and it shows no signs of slowing down. Internet traffic from streaming video in 2021 will quadruple today’s traffic, according to estimates by Cisco Visual Networking Index. That’s great for people using sites like Facebook, SnapChat or YouTube, the latter of which now has over 1 billion users — or nearly one-third of all internet users. But it’s a daunting task for enterprises that need to screen out inappropriate or illegal content uploaded to their platforms. JD is the second largest business-to-consumer e-commerce company in China. Using NVIDIA Tesla GPUs and our DeepStream software development kit  (SDK) based deep learning platform for smart video analytics, JD achieved a 40x increase in its video detection efficiency. Keeping Up When Your Business Goes POP JD, which has over 265 million active users, is on the Fortune Global 500 with a trading volume that reached nearly RMB1 trillion ($154 billion) in 2016. The rapid growth

Blockchain engineers are in demand

Demand is off the charts for blockchain talent, and the capital is waiting to back it up. Over $3.7 billion has been raised through ICOs in the United States alone. Blockchain-related jobs are the second-fastest growing in today’s labor market; there are now 14 jobs openings for every single blockchain developer. And as Nick Szabo, the developer who coined “smart contracts” pointed out there is an extreme “ $/knowledge ” ratio in the blockchain space, where capital by far outpaces talent. Today, Toptal , a marketplace for on-demand tech talent, is publicly launching their blockchain engineering talent vertical out of private beta. In today’s software development landscape, Toptal represents about 50 percent of on-demand engineering labor by revenue. Requests for on-demand blockchain talent are skyrocketing. Last year, freelance talent marketplace  Upwork  saw blockchain rise to the fastest-growing skill out of over 5,000 skills in terms of freelancer billings —  a year-over-year in
